Meeting destiny...

(This post is dedicated to all the graduates of 2014.)

“A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.” -Jean de La Fontaine

Oftentimes, as the sayings go, we can't see the forest for the trees or the answer right in front of our nose.

But, why?

If you're anything like me, I think so much of what we believe inadvertently comes from pop culture, movies, and novels much more than real life.

Just ask a 70, 80, or 90 year old if the life they have lived is the one they imagined when they were young. Most will tell you that their years have been full of surprises, and that in those surprises were some of life’s greatest joys.

Sometimes, the most difficult challenge we face is to change the picture in our minds of where we think we are going. Sometimes, as Jean de La Fontaine so aptly put it, the very thing we are running from is the very thing we are meant to do.

The scripts of life unfold like the roads of The Palouse – at times, they are an anchor, a fixed thoroughfare between points A and B; other times, they act as a diversion, a path to travel while soaking in the scenic beauty; and, sometimes, they are the roads that lead us to a ‘destiny’ that we could have never imagined but are meant to find.

Meeting destiny can happen when we least expect it. They key, I think, is to enjoy the view along the way.
