Take a walk...

Sun and mid-70s mark the weekend forecast for our neck of The Palouse.
With the perfect weather for an autumn walk, choices abound as to where to go. You can't go wrong with the campuses at UI or WSU, Lawson Gardens, Kamiak ButteUI's Arboretum and Botanical Garden, or the pastoral vibe of the Bill Chipman Trail (photos below).

The beloved naturalist John Muir once said: "In every walk with nature once receives far more than he seeks."

So this weekend, clear your head and let your troubles fade away...take a walk:

Have a GREAT weekend!

Kamiak September...

By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather,
And autumn's best of cheer.

--Helen Hunt Jackson September (17-20)

A Wednesday lunch hike on Kamiak revealed what I had hoped - fall's coming to the butte and it's gonna be a dandy. Hope you get out and enjoy it!

Happy Weekend!

Sugar and spice and so much more...

This shout-out today goes to our daughter. Happy Birthday!

“Sugar and spice and everything nice...that's what little girls are made of” - the nursery rhyme tells us so.

Our daughter came into the world chock-full of ALL of the above.

One of the happiest babies ever, she greeted us each morning with a wrinkled nose and a smile that melted our hearts. Giggly and funny, from the time she was tiny, she always had just the slightest glint of mischief in her eyes.

But the nursery rhyme didn't begin to cover the entirety of this little spitfire's larger-than-life personality.

Before we knew it she was talking, and by her second Christmas she could sing the entire lyrics for Up On The Housetop; she was two-years old.

It was clear very early on that this tiny blond-haired, blue-eyed lass was not going to be a shy little girl who hid behind her mother's skirt.

No. In fact, I often say that her first words were: “I can do it...myself.”

And, you know what?

She usually could.

She is the person you want in your corner when no one else in the world is on your side. When she believes in you, she will 'go to the mattresses' (a la The Godfather) for you, without pause.

She has a strength of spirit and determination like none other. She sets what many would deem out-of-reach goals, and she reaches them simply because she will not give up until she does.

She knows how to be strong when strength is what is needed, but the heart that beats inside her is one of the tenderest I've known.

She is funny. Sooo funny. So quick-witted and clever that sometimes I have to stop and ponder what she just said because she's so fast on the draw.

She is brave. And if there's one characteristic I most admire and—in all honesty—envy about our girl, that's the one. While fear clouds most things I do in life, from the start this child simply would not be held back by its grip.

That spirited little girl pictured above is now married to the kind of young man parents dream of for their daughters. Preparing to welcome their first baby into the world, I'm not gonna lie, a little part of me hopes his first words are: “I can do it...myself,” too ;)

Happy Birthday, daughter of ours. We love you.

Hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!
