The still of winter...

I love the still of winter on The Palouse.

There is always a sense of stillness in every season here, but in winter it's particularly acute. In truth, though, it wasn't until I lived in the midst of it that I truly began to appreciate its value.

Prior to purchasing the market and moving to Palouse in 2008, The Grocer and I had lived most of our married life near or surrounded by mountains and forest. I remember in years past when we'd drive through the surrounding area. I'd look out over the vast expanse of fields and feel a bit vulnerable in the wide open spaces. I didn't know if I liked it, or not. But, now?

Now, I crave the uncluttered spaces found here. I find their simplicity soothing and therapeutic. Against the constant drag on the senses of modern life, the stillness of The Palouse offers quiet and peaceful serenity.

Walt Whitman said it like this: "Simplicity is the glory of expression."

And, The Palouse is one simply beautiful place.

Wishing you a bit of winter's stillness.

Your customer did what?

As I was looking through my photos this morning, I came across this one. Back in June, one of our dear customers dropped by these lovely flowers fresh from his garden. Just because.

If by chance you're reading this from a big city store, you might be like: "Your customer did what?"

But, that's just one of countless examples why small town life in Palouse is so special.

Hope you had a lovely holiday.

A recent sighting of St. Nick in our very own Palouse.

Quick Takes: December in Palouse...

Palouse is such a pretty little town all year long, but it takes on a special kind of feel in December. Simply Norman Rockwell-esque.

For those of you who are kind enough to visit our blog but who live too far away to see our quaint hamlet in person, I thought I'd share some images from a recent morning stroll.

And if you do live nearby, it's the last big weekend before the holiday. Head on over and cross the last few items off your Christmas list! We have the coolest shops around!

Happy December!

As easy as 1, 2, 3...

Wanna make Christmas cookies without all the measuring, mixing, and mess? This little Cookie Decorating Kit is just the answer.

I bought one. I tried it. I loved it!

As easy as 1, 2, 3...festive, frosted, sprinkle cookies, and the only thing I dirtied was a knife :)

Put the FUN back in the holidays this year by making things a little easier! Everything doesn't have to be homemade.

Three little things...

a gift from a friend...even better

This time of year, we often think of the big things we're thankful for: good health, family, that kind of thing.

But there are little things, too. Things so seemingly insignificant that perhaps it's silly to give them a shout-out, but I find it's the little things in life that often make the biggest difference in my attitude.

So, here are three 'little' things that make me smile:

A good coffee mug~
If you're not a coffee drinker, this may seem silly, But, if you are a coffee drinker, I bet I don't even have to explain. The perfect vessel—to hold what to coffee lovers is the nectar of the gods—can be elusive. It must fit in your cupped palms as if it were made exclusively for you. It must hold the heat in and warm your heart as it warms your hands (A bit too much? Agreed ;). Still, there's nothing like finding that perfect mug. Reaching for it every morning = happiness. Plain and simple.

Finding money in your pocket~
Don't you just love that?! Like pulling a rabbit from a hat, the little moment of magic that comes with nabbing a bill hiding in the depths of your pocket yields a teeny-tiny sensation of winning the lottery. You can't help but feel a little lucky when money seemingly appears out of nowhere.

Waking up and finding out you still have two more hours left to sleep~
Full disclosure - I stole that one from an old Peanuts book from when I was a kid, but even then I knew it to be true. When you wake up in the dark of night, all bleary-eyed and fuzzy, sure the harsh buzz of the alarm is mere moments away, and you finally focus your eyes to discover that not only is the alarm NOT mere moments away but you actually have time to hunker back down and pull the covers up tight – that, my friend, is priceless. The gift of time, you can't buy it with all of the money in the world and when it's unexpectedly granted, it's something to be thankful for, indeed.

Here's hoping the holiday brings a few little things to make you smile, too.
Happy Thanksgiving!
